ABSTRACT
The loss of weight through diet and exercise, is one of the main therapeutic strategies recommended on the guidelines for the treatment of
diabetes type 2 patients with overweight or obesity. The Very Low Calorie Diets (VLCD) such as the Protein Diet, they can be a very good
option in obese patients with diabetic type 2 due to they produce a very fast loss of weight and a smaller waist circumference, and at the
same time it’s possible to produce a metabolic improvement in short and long term.
The reduction of the caloric intake, as well as the limited consumption of carbohydrates it’s the key that leads to ketosis, and at the same
time it’s able to improve the metabolic control if it is compared with another types of diets, even when the loss of weight is the same, due to
the reduction in the hepatic glucose production and an increase in sensitivity to insulin. This type of diets also are able to improve another
problems such as hypertension and Dyslipidemia, that could accelerate the development of diabetes complications. Currently, the Protein
Diet as a “Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) “constitute an efficient and safe choice for the treatment of the obese type 2 diabetic patients,
when it happens under appropriate medical supervision.
