Splenectomy. Experience in the Hospital General de México

ABSTRACT

It was studied the clinical files of patients from the emergency and general surgery that were submitted to splenectomy, from January 1995 to June 1999. There were included 51 patients in the study, 75.5% were females. The splenectomy was made more frequently due to idiopathic thrombocitopenic purpura. The surgical approach most used was open, in 96.1% of the patients, and drain was employed in 68.6% of all the cases. Postoperative complications were presents in 60.8% of the patients, and bleeding was the most frequent, the mortality rate observed was 5.9%.
