ABSTRACT
Diarrhea is the most frequent gastrointestinal symptom on patients infected by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). On
patients with less than 50 lymphocytes, the likelihood of developing diarrhea increases in a 48.5% in a year and a 74.3% in 2
years. Other important aspects that have an influence on the prevalence of diarrhea are the geographical location and sexual
habits.
The patient's immunological condition and the attachment to the antiretroviral therapy (ART) keep close relation with the
diarrheal profile's etiological agent, representing a diagnostic challenge due to the variety of common agents and opportunistic
pathogens that only affect these patients.
