ABSTRACT
Before introducing a new analytical method in the Clinical
Laboratory, it should be verified its clinical usefulness already
informed in literature. It has been described the serum Cystatin C
measurement as means to evaluate glomerular filtration rate. In the
clinical laboratory this evaluation is accomplished by creatinine
clearance in 24 h urine sample measurement. In this work were compared
results of measured creatinine clearance (urine-24 h) with obtained for
serum Cys C from 100 patients (50 males; 50 females), ages 7-70 years
old, referred to the lab. As comparison baseline for Cys C performance,
the results obtained from calculated creatinine clearance
(Cockcroft-Gault) were used. It was found that Cys C concentration
correlated with measured creatinine clearance, being this results
comparable statistically with calculated clearance creatinine. By this
way, we concluded that Cys C may substitute, in the clinical
laboratory, creatinine clearance measurement.
