Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome

ABSTRACT

Background: Respiratory distress syndrome of the newborn is a clinical condition encompassing various lung entities, the objective of the study was first, to identify the pulmonary causes of RDS and compare the clinical features of pulmonary etiology in the newborn. Material and methods: Historical cohort of infants with RDS in the neonatal unit of Children’s Hospital of Tacubaya from January to December 2010. We compared clinical characteristics according to causes of RDS. Results: One hundred nineteen newborns were analyzed, mean weight in grams 2,423 ± 749, gestational age 36.4 ± 2.8 weeks, requiring mechanical ventilation in 47 (39.5%) newborns, the average duration in hours was 157.3; the main etiology was transient tachypnea, followed by congenital pneumonia, the third cause was community-acquired pneumonia. The weight, gestational age, duration of ventilatory support resulted in statistically significant differences for each etiology identified with p ‹ 0.0001. Hyaline membrane disease, meconium aspiration syndrome and congenital pneumonia required mechanically ventilation in 46 newborns (38.6%), mean duration of 157.3 hours. Conclusions: RDS is the leading cause of admission to the neonatal unit of this second level pediatric hospital. The most common etiology was transient tachypnea of the new born; the second cause was congenital pneumonia being this one the first cause of death.
