ABSTRACT
World Health Organization defines telemedicine as «the use of information technology to deliver medical service from one place to another». It has been used for more than 1 century with a constant evolution creating a whole new overview for the way to practice medicine. Mexico’s health system is distributed based in its orography concentrating most of the specialized centers in the big cities which in turn makes difficult and sometimes impossible giving health coverage to a big proportion of the population. Telemedicine offers the advantage of eliminating the distance allowing a much more extensive health coverage, a better adherence to treatment, and a decrease in the expenditure of economical resources in terms of transportation, housing and productivity. The purpose of this paper is to expose the advantages, disadvantages, and limitations of telemedicine showing area of opportunity and requirements for the creation of a strong telemedicine program.
