ABSTRACT
Drawing on a psychological model of education, it is proposed to classify the studies that have been conducted on the performance of university students in four major areas. A) The first includes works that have studied the interaction between the student and the teacher. B) The second area involves studies of student interaction with learning materials. C) The third area contains studies related to student interactions with peers, and D) the last area includes investigations of dispositional nature factors that interfere or facilitate the academic performance of students in higher education. This paper aims to address the study of the family, understood as a set of relations of exchange and mutual involvement of a minimum social group which provides the conditions for the exercise of school practices. It seeks to characterize the families of students of psychology both on-campus and online at Iztacala Faculty and analyze the possible relationship between some of the structural and functional properties of family, and academic performance. 180 students participated. Three studies were conducted, one pre-post, one cross-type and a correlational one. Moos’ Family Environment Scale usefulness was also evaluated. The results were unexpected and point to the irrelevance of the role of the family on students’ academic performance in a higher education level. It is suggested to go on research that sheds light on the influence of different reference social groups, including family, friends, classmates and teachers.
