ABSTRACT
Diverse studies have demonstrated the importance of making an early diagnosis of the autistic spectrum disorders for their later treatment. The present work objective is to analyze difficulties encountered for making an early diagnosis of the Autistic Spectrum Disorder. It proposes a general definition of the diagnosis and its prevalence. Among the difficulties described by reviewed publications are found changes experienced in the symptomatology, loss of capabilities already acquired, differences in the terminology used, and absence of precise normative references on the development of psychological functions that are critical for diagnostic identification of the Autistic Spectrum Disorder.
