Epidemiological profile of the patient with chest trauma in the adult emergency department of the Hospital General «José G Parres», from January to December 2009

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the epidemiological profile of patients with thoracic trauma in the adult emergency department of Cuernavaca General Hospital «José G Parres» in 2009. Methodology: A retrospective-transversal, descriptive study was made with patients older than 15 years who were admitted to the emergency room of General Hospital of Cuernavaca with the diagnosis of thoracic trauma in 2009. An instrument containing epidemiological profile characteristics of patients admitted with chest trauma was made, such as age, sex, occupation, etc. found in the electronic clinical record, then captured in a database created in Excell. Descriptive statistical and frequency analysis was used. Results: 34 patients were admitted with chest trauma, no difference was found between the trauma of open and closed type. The gunshot wound was the main mechanism of injury 32.4%; pneumothorax was the most common complication in 42.2%; chest radiography diagnostic method used (88.2%) and probe pleurostomy as the invasive method (41.2%) that was done more; the age group most affected was 20-34 years (58.8%). The 94.1% were male, according to the type of occupation, employees had the highest percentage (29.4%). Died 8.8% and 2.9% apply for voluntary discharge. There was an association between pneumothorax with gunshot wounds and stab weapon both with the same percentage (14.7%).Conclusion: The epidemiological profile found in this study was similar to those made in other countries, the main difference was found in the mechanism of injury.
