ABSTRACT
This research was mainly aimed at knowing the relationship among psychological well-being, employment and unemployment within a group of HIV carriers. It was made with an observational-like descriptive design of transversal cut by implementing a non-probabilistic sample. Within the selection process, it was included VIH carriers who attended consultations between January and December 2010. The sample was made up with 202 subjects. This last was distributed into two groups taking into consideration whether they had a job or not. The two groups were numerically separated: according to gender 96 males and 6 females with jobs; and 93 males and 7 females without one. The high percentage of males is in accordance with the prevalence of genders of the HIV carrier population. The average age was 36,06 years old in total (36,8 who work and 35,23 who do not); the school median was 10 grades in both cases and the year median since they were diagnosed with HIV was 5 years in both cases as well. These two groups were comparable as no significant differences in terms of age (t= 1,58; p= 0,12), school years (t= -1,34; p= 0,19) or time with HIV were found. The chosen participants were introduced to the objectives, procedures and study assignments and were also requested authorization to be included in the process. They were assessed with a questionnaire about Psychological Well-being, as well as the Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ) in order to know about possible associations of its indicators in relation with the scores in the psychological well-being one. The results show that the group’s worker seems to have better mental health conditions since the evaluation of psychological well-being expresses that the sensations of comfort and pleasure are higher than among the jobless individuals. This appears to be related to larger values reached in variables of JCQ connected to authority and decision range as well as fewer psychological demands. The more or lesser use of abilities does not seem to make influence over the subjects tested.
