ABSTRACT
The inguinal herniorrhaphy is the most common elective procedure performed in the entire world. A great deal of effort has been applied to find the most suitable surgical procedure to treat this condition, and many techniques have been abandoned because the lack of good results. Until date there is still not any surgical technique universally accepted to be applied to the routine practice. This paper describes a pilot study in ten patients that received a simplification to the Shouldice technique for the treatment of groin hernia, which has the largest statistic of performed procedures (more than 216,000) and with the lowest recurrence rate (less than 1%). In the performance of this new technique, the principles of the Shouldice technique are preserved, as they are 1) adjustment of the deep inguinal orifice and 2) reinforcement of the posterior wall of the inguinal canal at the Hesselbach’s triangle, with the advantage of tension release through a simple running suture with a synthetic non-absorbable material.
