Treatment of corneal abrasions with acetylcysteine 10%

ABSTRACT
Introduction: The corneal abrasions are frequent in ophthalmic emergencies and is a routine to cover the eye during 24 hours or more, this is uncomfortable for the patient, who would like a different treatment. Another option in this cases might indicated acetylcysteine 10% drops for blocking epithelium collagenases and mitigate the corneal abrasions without covering the eye. Objective To compare the efficient and tolerance of the conjunctival acetylcysteine 10% with metilcelulose 0.5% in patients with corneal injury.
Methods: This is an experimental study, comparative, simple blind, it was done at the General Hospital of Mexico. There were 2 groups of 52 patients each one of them, study group receive acetylcysteine 10% (Sophia preparation) 4/day/3 days. And other group of patients who receive metilocelulose 0.5% same frecuency and quantity.
Results: Acetylcysteine disappears punctate corneal in the 30%/24 hours and 72%/72 hours, with metilcelulose no improve was shown until to 34%/72 hours. The foreign body sensation was less in 34%/24 hours and less in 89%/72h. With metilcelulose improvement was seen in 19%/24h and 40% in 72h. Adverses effects were itching with acetylcysteine and red eye with metilcelulose. Conclusions: The acetylcysteine 10% was more efficient that metilcelulose for improving the corneal abrasions.
