ABSTRACT
Background: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant tumor which can arise from the epidermal keratinocytes and other epithelia. It has the capacity of infiltration, local destruction and distant dissemination.
Objective: To determine the frequency of squamous cell carcinoma in Mexican population as well as to elucidate their main epidemiologic and clinical aspects.
Methods: Clinical files from February 1992 to January 2002 of the Dermatooncologic Unit and the Dermatopathology Department of the Hospital General de Mexico, were reviewed. Those cases with clinical and histopathologic diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma were set apart. The following patient information was obtained from the files: age, gender, associated predisposing conditions, location, clinical type, size and number of lesions, time of evolution, degree of histological differentiation and presence of clinical metastasis.
Results: In 363 charts 508 tumors were found. There was a higher frequency in female patients (61.4%). The predominant location was in the face (68.9%) and the leading clinical type was ulcerated (44.1 %). Well- differentiated squamous cell carcinoma was the most frequent histologic type (96.5%) and the dominant precursor lesion was actinic keratosis (36.3%).
Conclusions: Squamous cell carcinoma has a higher incidence in females mostly in their 7th decade of life. The predominant location was in the cheek, and the most frequent clinical presentation was ulcerated.
