ABSTRACT
The objective of this research was to find the ways that college students use social desirability strategies that enable them appear in a positive way for avoiding rejection within the couple relationship, showing the similarities and contrasting the differences of their use by gender. We worked with a non probabilistic sample of 250 university students (125 men and 125 women) from the city of Toluca, within a rank of age of 19 to 25 years. The instrument that we applied consisted of 50 items that try to know the use of strategies that they use to show a positive behavior and be accepted by their couple. The participants use these strategies to avoid conflicts, maintain a stable relationship, furthermore to get benefits and affections, hiding situations that might cause pain or rejection. Of equal way it is possible to observe that the men in comparison with the women tend more to lie, to hide, to pretend and to pretend to have, to be or to live in a different way from what they have or what they are. We conclude that humans in general have a need to please and be approved by the others and constantly seeks the acceptance and the avoidance of rejection by means of the lie (Valdez Medina, 2009), which is the basis of social desirability and that according to the results is present within relationships providing an apparent situation of stability.
