Frequency of benign bone tumors in children

ABSTRACT
Background: Benign bone tumors and pseudotumoral lesions are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that affect children and adults.
Since a clinical and morphological point of view, bone tumors are divided into two groups: malignant and benign. Benign tumors and
pseudotumoral lesions most frequently seen in children and adolescents are osteochondroma, fibrous dysplasia, simple bone cyst,
chondroma, osteoid osteoma, aneurysmal cyst and chondromyxoid fibromas.
Objectives: To identify benign bone tumors and pseudotumoral lesions detected in the pediatric population of the Regional Hospital
General Ignacio Zaragoza (ISSSTE) and to know the most affected pediatric age and the most frequent type of tumor.
Material and methods: The analysis was performed using a retrospective and cross-sectional study, consisting of the review of cases
of patients with histopathologic diagnosis of benign bone tumor or pseudotumoral lesion, from 2001 to 2012.
Results:The most frequent bone tumors and pseudotumoral lesions were: osteochondroma (43%), aneurysmal bone cyst (17%),
fibrous dysplasia (16%), enchondroma (8%), chondroma (5%), osteoid osteoma (4%) and giant cell tumor (3%).
Conclusion: The result of this study is comparable with those found in the literature and concluded that benign bone tumors are more
common in men; osteochondroma, aneurysmal bone cyst and fibrous dysplasia are the most frequent.
