ABSTRACT
One of the most important commissions of the anesthesiologist in the surgical room, is to maintain the vital signs with security to the patient. To have an equipment of complete and efficient monitoring, allows the accuracy of watchfulness in function during anesthetic-surgical procedures. The pulse oximetry is non invasive method which contributes to guarantee the saferess of anesthesia. It is the last point of a series of scientific discoveries. Starning from the commercialization, offers to wach the ventilatory function in an extensive variety of clinical and surgical areas. In this article, the conventional pulse oximetry, its evolution, principles of operation, indications, limitations, and complication are described. A new perspective in the pulse oximetry with reflectance technology appears, as well as, modalities and future applications.
