ABSTRACT
Objective: to measure the association between social economic conditions and the presence of risk factors for intoxications and poisonings at home in children under five years old within Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara (MAG).
Methods: from July 2001 to December 2002 we surveyed 439 family houses were lived children below five years old randomly selected in the MAG. Social economic level, demographics, and bodies of water and accessories present at home were variables included.
Results: children from the lower social economic level are exposed more frequently to cleaning agents and medicines. It is considered that the height at which insecticides, poisons and solvents are located provides a security condition, because it ensures that they are out of reach of children.
Conclusions: this study showed that among MAG families have to a higher exposure to risk factors. It is necessary to improve the conditions of the household and storage products to create safe spaces for children.
