ABSTRACT
A case-control study was carried out in order to identify the risk factors for oral leukoplakia in people over 60 years, belonging to "30 de Noviembre" Polyclinic of Santiago de Cuba from September 2009 to July 2010. Two groups were divided: one of 13 members with a confirmed diagnosis of this condition (cases) and the other with 26 of the same community (control) that were selected at a rate of 1:2, according to age and sex. To determine the statistical association odds ratio was used and criteria of causation were taken into account. Risk factors associated with oral leukoplakia were smoking habit, alcohol consumption and presence of sharp edges in the prosthesis.
