ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify prognostic factors associated with the outcome of the patient with traumatic brain injury (TBI) admitted to an Adult Intensive Care Unit (AICU).
Design: A descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study.
Setting: A secondary-care hospital.
Patients and methods: TBI patients › 14 years with neither thoracic or abdominal trauma were included. In-hospital outcome, age, gender, cause of TBI, Glasgow Coma Score, requirement for tracheal intubation and for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in the emergency room, tomographic findings, surgical intervention and assistance of the ventilation (AV), were the included variables.
Interventions: None.
Results: Seventy patients were included. Mortality rate was 37.1%. The univariate analysis identified CPR (OR 2.9, 95% CI, 2 to 4; p ‹ 0.05) and non-AV (OR 0.6, 95% CI 0.5 to 0.8; p ‹ 0.05) as the only factors associated with the outcome. The cumulated survival was 18% at 17th AICU stay.
Conclusions: Among these patients with TBI an adverse factor, (RCP) and a protector factor (non AV) were associated with the outcome.
