ABSTRACT
Background: amoebic liver abscesses are common in our country, however, statistics are not specific to our environment that establish the differences that can be found with respect to that reported in the international literature. Methods: Retrospective study by analyzing 50 cases of patients with amebic liver abscess treated at the General Hospital of Sonora Dr. Ernesto Ramos Bours, between November 2005 and November 2007. We identified the clinical, radiological and laboratory.
Results: We identified 48 abscesses that met the criteria for diagnosis of amebic liver abscess and two as pyogenic liver abscess. The average age at diagnosis was 40 years and 78% of patients were male. The average stay in the hospital was 11 days. In 54% of patients were considered, at least some differential diagnosis. The ultrasonogram reported 38 as sole abscesses. The most common complication was rupture into the peritoneum. All patients were complicated during the hospital stay had since joining, at least, an ultrasonographic criteria for drainage.
Conclusions: In this study it was possible to observe patients with amoebic liver abscesses larger with higher complication rates and less responsive to medical therapy compared with those reported in the international literature. Furthermore, it was realized that in patients with ultrasonographic criteria since joining drainage, complications were more frequent if drainage were not covered in the first 24 hours.
