ABSTRACT
A special group of retinal ganglion cells contains the
photopigment melanopsin which makes these cells
intrinsecally photosensitive. These cells are the
photoreceptors described most recently in the retina
(ipRGC). Behavioral, physiological and knocking out
experiments have shown that ipRGC participate in a
series of functions not related with vision, collectively
known as extravisual functions of retina, the most
prominent of these being photosincronization of the
circadian clock. It still remains to described the
phototransduction mechanism started by melanopsin
and the cell-cell interactions that could modulate the
ipRGCs functions. Hence, the discovery of these cells
has opened a new research field within sensory
physiology.
