ABSTRACT
Objective: To know the epidemiology of stroke. Design: Clinical, longitudinal, retrospective study. Setting: Third level health care hospital.
Patients and methods: We assessed 2,804 cases of stroke in a 13 years time span, from January 1988 to December 2000. The cases were divided in five groups: Cerebral infarction, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral embolism, transient cerebral ischemia and venous thrombosis. Statistical analysis: Descriptive.
Results: From 54,287 patients, 2,804 (5.17%) were due to stroke. Cerebral infarction was found in 1,294 (46.15%), cerebral hemorrhage in 984 (35.10%), cerebral embolism in 264 (9.41%), transient cerebral ischemia in 250 (8.91%) and venous thrombosis in 12 (0.43%). Most cases were found between 60 and 80 years old patients. Extreme ages from 15 to 106 years. Male to female ratio was of 1.00:1.39. Medial left cerebral artery and medial right cerebral artery rated first and second location on cerebral infarction, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral embolism and transient cerebral ischemia. Longitudinal superior sinus was rated first location in venous thrombosis. Mortality for stroke was of 266 cases 9.49%. Of those hemorrhage was of 184 cases (69.17%), infarction 60 cases (22.55%), embolism 21 cases (7.89%) and transient cerebral ischemia 1 case (0.38%).
