ABSTRACT
Objective. To conduct musculoskeletal and orthopedic screening in adolescents in order to find out prevalence of deformities.
Methods. Three thousand and one hundred students from The University of Guanajuato participated (1,563 men and 1,537 women). They underwent medical history, anthropometric and body composition measurement and orthopedic evaluation according to the procedures of Magee.
Results. Mean age and SD for boys and girls were 15 + 2 and 15 + 3 years respectively. In general, men presented more abnormalities than women with minimal differences between genders. 70% of them exhibit at least one alteration. Principal alterations were scoliosis, flat feet and genu valgo with a prevalence of 36.4%, 19.8% and 15.6% respectively. 49% presented calluses that in most of the cases were related to other anomalies. High arched feet, kyphosis, leg length
discrepancy, hallux valgues and chest deformities were observed with less frequency. In
Conclusion. It was found a very high prevalence for musculoskeletal anomalies in Mexican adolescents. These alterations have been related as a predisponing factors in injuries for overuse
and associated in some cases with chronical diseases. It is very important to detect as early as possible these pathologies in order to avoid later musculoskeletal complications.
