ABSTRACT
Introduction: Percutaneous tracheostomy is a set of procedures in order to obtain a patent airway facilitating prolonged ventilation by intubation laryngeal preventing damage, so we decided to analyze the clinical experience of percutaneous tracheostomy in patients with prolonged intubation in the intensive care unit of the High Specialty Hospital of Veracruz.
Material and methods: Data were obtained from patients admitted to intensive care unit for percutaneous tracheostomy. We analyzed demographics, diagnoses related to need for the procedure, time between onset of ventilatory support of patients and performing percutaneous tracheostomy, complications, hospital stay days.
Results: The total group was 30 patients, 60% male and 40% female, age range was 18 to 84 years, with an average of 50.03 and a mode of 27. Only a procedure had to be converted to conventional form. Diagnoses were found: head trauma (36.7%), stroke (16.7%), severe pancreatitis (10%), abdominal sepsis (20%), and another cause (16.7%). There was no case of death directly related to the procedure or major complications.
Conclusion: Percutaneous tracheostomy is a safe, simple and fast, low-cost, less surgical time and lower complication rates. Ciaglia’s method has nearly 100% reliability. The procedure was related to less surgical time and lower complication rate, but in no case was associated with death.
