Treatment of rheumatoid thumb deformities

ABSTRACT
The thumb finger is affected in 60% of the patients with rheumatoid arthritis; their daily life activities is compromised. Boutonniere and swan neck are the most frequent deformities. We studied 70 patients with rheumatoid arthritis from 1971 to 1999 in the ABC Hospital; 42 of these patients had deformities of the thumb, and they were classified according to Nalebuff. Orthopaedic treatment was given to 27 patients and 15 where treated surgically according to Flatt obtaining good results.
