ABSTRACT
Objective:
To determine the sensitivity and specificity of the fine needle biopsy for the salivary glands neoplasm, and to evaluate the correlation between the clinical and pathologic diagnosis in the Otolaryngology Department of the «Dr. Manuel Gea González» General Hospital of Mexico City. Method:
To compare the clinical, with the cytological diagnosis obtained with a fine needle biopsy with the histopathological diagnosis. Results:
The sensitivity of the fine needle biopsy for the neoplasm of salivary glands was of 56% with a specificity of 87%. Conclusions:
The fine needle aspiration biopsy technique is a safe and well tolerated procedure, however inconclusive for the final diagnosis in salivary gland pathology.
