ABSTRACT
Introduction. Image guided puncture biopsy has become a valuable tool to establish an accurate and timely diagnosis of the nature of lesions in different regions of the body, which manifest clinically and may be suitable for cytopathological analysis.
Objective: Provide a specific diagnostic impression based on the image characteristics of lesions suspected of malignancy in different parts of the body and determine the degree of concordance between preliminary and definitive image cytopathology reports for timely and specific initiation of treatment.
Material and methods: Ninety patients with diagnosis of mass or lesion suspected of malignancy were evaluated, taking puncture biopsies of the lesions suspected of malignancy. This was done with two 16-detector multislice CT machines and high resolution ultrasound machine at the Hospital Regional del ISSSTE “Gral. Ignacio Zaragoza” radiology and image service. In these patients, the radiological diagnosis was correlated with the cytopathological report.
Results: Ninety patients with diagnoses of tumoral lesions or lesions suspected of malignancy in different areas of the body were studied. Of the lesions biopsied, 52% were benign, 46% malignant, and only 1% was reported as inconclusive. Of the 41 malignant lesions (46%), the most common histological type was adenocarcinoma (15%), in 13 patients. The results of the cytopathological report coincided with the radiological report in 69 patients, which means 77% efficacy.
Conclusions: The preliminary radiological report, following an image guided biopsy, us a useful tool for clinical physicians in patient care, helping them recognize the severity of patients’ conditions and act accordingly. Image guided biopsy is a safe and reliable procedure as the first option to detect malignant tumors, for rapid recovery by the patient and with a low percentage of complications.
