ABSTRACT
Introduction. Infection with human papilloma virus is the most common sexually transmitted viral infection. Effective prevention program design requires knowing the subjects’ existing levels interest in the topic, determining current knowledge levels, and then developing strategies to communicates precise and clear information.Objective. The aim was to determine the subjects levels of interest in knowing about the human papilloma virus (HPV) and cervical cancer in a group of students.
Materials and Method. A cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-administered instrument of 18 approaches, which assessed the interest in the following topics: What is the HPV virus? What are the symptoms, what types of the virus, and site(s) of frequent outbreaks, characteristics of the lesions, diagnostic methods for women, vaccines, transmission, treatment, prevention, virus and cervical cancer, risk for the couple, diagnosis in men, and information on pap smear and cervical cancer test results.
Results. 140 subjects were included; 79% were female and 21% male. Symptoms of the disease, transmission and prevention were the topics of highest interest. 94% of all students reported being very interested in prevention, and 90% were interested in the symptoms of the disease. Interest in HPV disease diagnosis for male subjects was the issue scoring lowest, since only 59% were “very interested”.
Conclusions. The results of this work reveal that transmission and prevention strategies of HPV infection are very important to young men and female. There were signifi cantly lower levels of interest in knowledge related to opposite gender
