ABSTRACT
Aromatase inhibitors (AI) are compounds that diminish estrogen biosynthesis through reversible inhibition of aromatase enzymatic complex. The first generation of AI was developed in 1960, and the indications for their use had been adjusted in time thanks to improvement on their efficiency and less toxicity of the third generation ones. Nowadays, the main indication for their use is as adjuvant therapy in positive estrogen receptors breast cancer mainly in postmenopausal women. Other indications such as ovulation induction in patients with OMS II anovulation, controlled ovarian hyperstimulation in patients going to assisted reproduction techniques and medical treatment of selected cases of myomatosis and endometriosis, promise to extend their use in human reproductive medicine.
