ABSTRACT
Sporotrichosis is a sub acute or chronic infection caused by multiple distinct species of
Sporothrix. Infection is usually acquired by cutaneous inoculation, an initial papule, nodule or verrucous lesion forms at the site of skin inoculation, and it becomes pustular and ulcerates (fixed type). In the lymphocutaneous form, an ascending chain of nodules develops along skin lymphatic channels. Rarely other tissues are involved by hematogenous dissemination particularly in inmunocompromised hosts (1.5% of cases). Definite laboratory diagnosis requires the isolation of
Sporothrix schenckii in culture. The histologic findings are: a suppurating granuloma with neutrophils, histiocytes and giant cells surrounded by lymphocytes and plasma cell, «asteroid bodies» or yeast forms can be demonstrated in the biopsy samples. Antibody measurement techniques are also available, as well as molecular DNA-restriction-analysis, used as epidemiology research tools. This paper presents an up-date critical review of laboratory diagnostic methods and techniques available, with a full recent description of the etiologic agent, and the epidemiology, of sporotrichosis in Mexico.
