ABSTRACT
It is known that hematopoiesis is regulated by endogenous cytokines, however it has been recently found that other exogenous molecules can co-participate in this activity. This paper reviews the advances in the knowledge of the mechanisms involved in the regulation of the proliferation and differentiation of myeloid leukaemia cell lines and of normal mice mononuclear bone marrow cells by casein. We present evidence that casein, its subunits, as well as some of the bioactive peptides that it contains have the property of inhibiting the proliferation and to induce differentiation of leukemic cell lines
in vitro. On the other hand, casein induces proliferation of normal hematopoietic cells
in vitro and
in vivo, and its administration promotes survival in a model of leukaemia in mice.
