ABSTRACT
Background: NK cells are large lymphocytes with abundant cytoplasmic granules, that bear the CD3-, CD16/56+ phenotype. NK lineage tumors stem from either NK precursors or from mature NK cells. An interim classification into 6 tumor types was proposed at the third meeting of the NK cell tumor study group (NKSG), held in Japan in 2000. Each of the 6 types exhibits different clinical features.
Material and Methods: Fourteen cases of NK cell tumors were found amongst 8467 leukemia cases studied at Laboratorios Clínicos de Puebla from january 1997 to march 2010. A cytomorphologic study of the sample was performed in each case, and the immunologic classification was made according to the guidelines from the Latin American Consensus Conferences for Flow Cytometric Immunophenotyping of Hematological Malignancies.
Results and Discussion: The types of NK neoplasia analyzed in this study were rather heterogeneous. According to the NKSG classification, four cases corresponded to NK precursor/myeloid leukemia, three cases were classified as NK precursor acute leukemia, and three more were chronic NK cell lymphocytosis; the remaining cases were two blastic NK cell leukemia, and two aggressive NK cell lymphoma/leukemia. Inasmuch as the complete clinical records of some of the cases were not available, the NKSG classification criteria were not fulfilled in all instances; however, the antigenic profiles of the neoplastic cells were consonant with those considered in this classification.
