ABSTRACT
As a result of the steady improvement on the knowledge of multiple aspects of hematological diseases, as well as the remarkable advance on diagnosis resources and the frequent and significant addition of sophisticated pharmacological agents, hematologists is in a privileged position to develop important scientific research of the highest quality and relevance. In our country, this fact is frequently overlooked by the same physicians. In addition to the traditional aspects of hematological research, subjects as hematopoietic stem cell transplant and cellular therapy offer important opportunities for original contributions by the hematologist. The National System of Researchers (SNI) of the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT) grants the distinction of National Researcher at different levels, based on the merit and importance of contributions of scientists, including physicians. The sui generis characteristics of hematology practice facilitate to attain such a distinction; to that end it is necessary to stimulate hematological research in our country, in order to multiply, in the short term, the number of hematologists included in the SNI. Currently, only 44 hematologists, representing the 2.76% of the whole health sciences chapter, and 0.27% of the whole number of researchers recognized by the SNI are hematologists.REFERENCES
