ABSTRACT
The hand is affected in 90% of the patients with rheumatoid arthritis, the boutonnière deformities in 36% and fixed deformities in 18%. It has a characteristic position with metacarpophalangeal extension, flexion of the proximal interphalangeal joint and hyperextension of the distal interphalangeal joint. From 1971 to 1999 we studied at the ABC Hospital, 70 patients with rheumatoid arthritis, 26 had boutonnière deformities, we used Nalebuff and Millender classification. In stages I and II the treatment was orthopaedic, in stage III arthrodesis was performed in all cases obtaining better cosmetic appearance, better function and stability.
