ABSTRACT

A literature review was made on the diabetic foot, in order to prepare and to submit a medical treatment algorithm to be followed in treating this disease with Heberprot P, and on the changes of surgical paradigms resulting from the introduction of this drug. The papers published from 2000 to 2011 were reviewed, from which 17 original articles and a report of treated cases supported this study. Four algorithms were presented; three of them changed, namely, the tendon, the exposed bone and the heel necrosis, whereas the fourth shows the steps to be followed to manage any type of diabetic foot. These results are useful tools that contribute to maintain good surgical practice and to reduce lower limb amputation risk in those patients with diabetic foot.
