ABSTRACT
Introduction: the chronic venous insufficiency is one of the most frequent problems among the vascular diseases globally.
Objective: to estimate the incidence and the prevalence of chronic venous insufficiency in El Cerro municipality and to identify the clinical manifestations and the symptoms of the patients who were seen at the angiology service.
Methods: a cross-sectional study, based on cluster sampling, was carried out to determine the number of health areas to be studied. Two polyclinics were finally selected. All the patients who went to the angiological service over a year were included. All the diagnosed patients were questioned and physically examined; their general data and aspects related to their disease were collected from individual surveys.
Results: predominance of females averagely aged 66 years. The prevalence of the venous chronic insufficiency adjusted for age and sex was 9.9 per 100 patients, being higher in females than in males (11.4 vs. 5.9). The incidence was 1 %. The varicose veins in legs, the edema and the skin changes were the components of the chronic venous insufficiency that force the patients to go to the service, as well as the sensation of heavy legs and cramps.
Conclusions: El Cerro municipality presents higher incidence and prevalence rates in women. The fundamental clinical manifestation is varices whereas the most common symptom is the sensation of heavy legs.
