ABSTRACT
This is a retrospective, observational and longitudinal study of thyroidectomies performed at The ABC Medical Center from January 1998 to July 2001. There were 156 thyroidectomies, 14.1% of them follicular neoplasm. Twenty-two patients included, fine needle aspiration was performed in 16 (72.72%) classified as undetermined. Ten patients underwent nuclear scan, all had a cold nodule. Four patients (18.18%) were diagnosed utilizing conventional sonogram and one (4.54%) by physical examination. Frozen section was performed in 18 patients (81.81%), 10 of which were reported as a follicular neoplasm, 5 adenomas and 2 carcinomas. One was postponed until definitive analysis. Of the final diagnoses, 18 were benign and 3 malign. Mortality rate was cero. Frozen sections are widely used by surgeons in our hospital. The correlation of the frozen section and definite diagnose was with no errors. Management of follicular neoplasm in The ABC Medical Center is safe, with no perioperatory mortality and minimal morbidity.
