ABSTRACT
Objective: To find there is a relationship between changes in the hystopathology of the nasal mucosa in the inhabitants of Mexico City that are exposed to polluted air and compare those changes with the ones that can be find in the nasal mucosa of inhabitants of non metropolitan cities of the Mexican Republic. Design: Prospective, comparative, blind observational and transversal.
Methods: We included the first 120 patients that accepted in a written manner to participate in the study without any pathology of the nose and the paranasal sinuses. Then we divided the study in two groups: those living in the metropolitan area of Mexico City (n = 88) and those who live elsewhere (n = 32). We revised the pathologic study of the biopsy of the nasal mucosa from the inferior turbinate, and then try to correlate with the exposition to pollutants.
Results: We did not find statistical differences in the presence of epidermoid metaplasia of the nasal mucosa from those patients exposed to pollution and those who were not.
Conclusions: It is not possible to conclude scientifically that the exposition to pollution in the inhabitants of Mexico City produces hystopathological changes in the nasal mucosa.
