ABSTRACT
We evaluated the X Rays of 54 hands in at least two standard projections from 50 random patients at the ABC Medical Center seeking for degenerative changes at the thumb basal joint. These changes were classified according to the criteria for trapeziometacarpal arthrosis proposed by Eaton and Littler in each one of the four articulations of the trapezium. The age and sex were also recorded. The aim of this study was to obtain the percentage of damage in such articulations, and their relation with age, sex and dominant hand, we then compared our results with those reported on the international literature, since this is the first study in Mexico. After analyzing the information obtained from the study, we did not find any difference regarding the papers published world-wide. Of the 54 hands, 57.4% had degenerative changes in different stages, being the trapeziometacarpal joint the most frequently involved and the trapeziotrapezoid the one that present less affection. Women were affected 22.6% more than men and the average age for evidence of radiographic changes was 50 years. Our results strongly suggest that there is a clear relationship between the disease and the dominant hand.
