ABSTRACT
Objective. To demonstrate that the maternal ignorance of the operative concept of fever implies action like the antibiotic abuse.
Methods. Using a transversal and observational study carried out between March and December 2010. A questionnaire was administered to a sample population attending a paediatric service in the central South Hospital of Mexican Oils. Group I encompassed patients whose mothers understood the concept of ≥ 38°C degrees as a fever, and Group II included patients whose mother claimed not to know the temperature classed as fever, or they gave a lower figure than 38°C, or they understood the concept but did not use a thermometer.
Results: A total of 230 patients who attended the hospital’s emergency paediatric clinic with their mothers were included; 32/230 (14%) vs. 198/230 (86%). The percentage of mother prescriptions of antithermal was documented in 16 (51.4%) in group 1 vs. 174 (88.2%) in group II, p ‹ 0.05; whereas the antibiotic use on the part of the mother presented statistical difference.
Conclusions. The erroneous conceptualization of key data by the patient is an area that should be emphasized to a much greater extent; the incorrect identification and expression of the child’s symptoms by the mother can lead to medical error.
