ABSTRACT
Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by progressive deterioration of cartilage of synovial joints, with an imbalance between peptides that stimulate the production and remodeling of extracellular matrix components.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of polymerized-collagen in patients with knee OA, as well as to determine if it is capable to avoid total knee replacement surgery.
Design: Randomized, multicentric, descriptive, open clinical trial.
Results: Two thousand and five hundred five patients from 16 medical specialty units (UMAEs) were selected. Seventy eight per cent of patients had significant pain improvement
vs 19.91% that remains with symptomatic OA. Ninety two per cent of patients avoid joint replacement surgery
vs 8.29%.
Conclusions: Intraarticular administration of polymerized-collagen weekly during 6 weeks was safe and effective, decreased pain and avoided joint replacement surgery in patients with knee OA.
