Uso del colágeno polimerizado tipo I en el tratamiento no quirúrgico de la gonartrosis, experiencia en el IMSS

ABSTRACT

Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by progressive deterioration of cartilage of synovial joints, with an imbalance between peptides that stimulate the production and remodeling of extracellular matrix components. Objective: To evaluate the effect of polymerized-collagen in patients with knee OA, as well as to determine if it is capable to avoid total knee replacement surgery. Design: Randomized, multicentric, descriptive, open clinical trial. Results: Two thousand and five hundred five patients from 16 medical specialty units (UMAEs) were selected. Seventy eight per cent of patients had significant pain improvement vs 19.91% that remains with symptomatic OA. Ninety two per cent of patients avoid joint replacement surgery vs 8.29%. Conclusions: Intraarticular administration of polymerized-collagen weekly during 6 weeks was safe and effective, decreased pain and avoided joint replacement surgery in patients with knee OA.
