Navigation surgery in craniofacial surgery: A review and evaluation of the technology and practical application

ABSTRACT
Advances in scientific research within the field of computer assisted surgery have been introduced into clinical routine. Reconstructive craniofacial surgery as well as congenital or acquired deformities reconstruction have been improved by the introduction of frameless stereotaxy with the instrumental navigation systems, which allow the surgeon to plan, simulate and control intra- or postoperative phase through the visualization of multiplanar and 3D-CT/-MRI- data in real time. For the first time, the navigation systems enable the surgeon to show the exact instrument position or to check the contour at the operation site on the three-dimensional image of the patient. Computer-assisted and robotic techniques are advances for modern craniofacial surgery that allow optimizing preoperative planning and help to improve the precision and quality of surgical procedures.
