Systematization in the treatment of chronic empyema sequelae

ABSTRACT

The chronic empyema is a complication that is presented secondary to a lung infection, if it is not handled adequately it leaves a cavity that requires different steps to be repaired satisfactorily. We propose a systematization for patients with defect of the thoracic cavity secondary to chronic empyema. From April 1998 to July 2000, ten patients diagnosed with chronic empyema and defect of the pleural cavity secondary to thoracostomy in window were included. Cultures of the thoracic cavity were taken from each patient, TAC, fistulography and the volume of the cavity was measured, the defect was classified and the thoracic cavity was reconstructed. To know what to do previously gives way to single surgical act performed in a secure and satisfactory way.
