ABSTRACT
Introduction: Intravascular catheters have become an indispensable tool for our medical practice. We allow a safe and stable vascular access, through which fluids or medication, take samples for analysis or perform hemodynamic monitoring. Therefore it is necessary to know the frequency of nosocomial infections related to central line.
Objective: To determine the frequency of nosocomial infection associated with central line in the Division of Neonatology at the Hospital of Gynecology and Obstetrics IMIEM of March 1, 2009 to December 31, 2010.
Methods: We conducted an observational study, descriptive, prospective and transversal. It took a total of 132 cultures for suspected central catheter-related infection, of which 68 were reported positive pathogen isolated, and only 62 met the inclusion criteria.
Results: The frequency of infections related to central line was 8%. The age group most affected was that of extreme prematurity (58.4%), the most affected gender was male (53.2%).
S. epidermidis was isolated in 75.8%, the most widely used catheter was the umbilical vein (69.4%) and catheter dwell time was 3 to 25 days with a mean of 9.32 ± 5.4 days.
Conclusion: These results show that catheter-related nosocomial infection in the institution is less than that reported in the literature (8
vs 30%), the most affected premature end, the umbilical venous catheter was the most used and the infectious agent most frequent was
S. epidermidis.
