ABSTRACT
Computed tomography has revolutionized image diagnosis. Due to its rapid technological evolution and greater availability, its use is growing at a vertiginous rate; however, it is not innocuous, because patients are exposed to doses of ionizing radiation that can entail small, but significant risks of developing cancer, especially in children. Because the long-term risks are unknown, in the context of radiological protection of the patient, it is accepted that such doses should be limited, which requires a general knowledge of measuring parameters and methods of reducing and controlling radiation. This article is intended to serve as a guide to important concepts needed to understand such factors, and to orient the reader on the bibliography related to the topic as an aid to conscientious use of this valuable diagnostic tool.
