ABSTRACT
Hiatal hernia is the most frequent anomaly of the upper gastrointestinal tract. It consist of a partial or complete passing of the stomach to the thorax. There are two types: paraesophageal and sliding hernias, been the former the most common. A barium esophagogram is the preferred examination in this pathology due to its ability to show suprahiatal lower esophageal sphincter as well as gastric mucose in the thoracic cavity. This article studies 40 cases, and shows a higher incidence among women older than 60 years. Three cases are also illustrated.
