ABSTRACT
Over the past 20 years, the concepts and techniques of nerve repair have changed dramatically. Reconstruction through nerve grafts, rather than «go out of style» remains the gold standard in many cases, and under ideal conditions provide very similar results to those obtained with primary repair. Initial results with nerve grafts were disappointing but today may be even regarded as the gold standard with which newest nerve reconstruction techniques are being compared. The surgeon must take into account various parameters affecting the recovery of nerve repair, in order to achieve a tension-free nerve repair, and timely implementation of basic and advanced principles that may have a positive effect on the outcome.
