ABSTRACT

Modern imagenology plays a central role in contemporary medicine. Its intrinsic value in screening, diagnosis, staging, surveying and therapeutic options are unquestionable. Many studies require use of contrast media, which are very different in composition and routes of administration. Mainly, the route is intravenous, using iodated media. Unfortunately, these agents are not exempt from producing adverse reactions, the majority of which are mild and transitory but sometimes can be severe and even mortal. Recognition of susceptible populations as well as early diagnosis and the beginning of appropriate treatment clearly make the difference when physicians face this situation. This paper is a review, as well as a guide for management of adverse reactions to contrast media in radiology and imaging.
