ABSTRACT
Introduction: There are several reports of avascular necrosis of the femoral head treated with hyperbaric oxygenation in the literature, but this treatment has not been reported in the Mexican environment where it is not a commonly used therapy.
Method: Follow-up with MRI and gammagraphy of three patients with avascular necrosis of the femoral head diagnosed by MRI and treated with hyperbaric oxygenation at 2 ATA (202.6 kPa) for 90 min.
Results: MRI and gammagraphy demonstrated revascularization and remodelation of the bone.
Conclusions: The present study shows the use of hyperbaric oxygenation in avascular necrosis of the femoral head by means of a case presentation in which there was revascularization and remodelation of bone monitored by Tc99 and MRI. This study did not show an adverse effect of this treatment; thus, we could propose hyperbaric oxygenation as an alternative to surgery especially in young patients.
