ABSTRACT
Objectives: to evaluate the antimicrobial effectiveness of 8% povidone-iodine, in reducing colony-forming units of Mutans Streptococci (MS) in saliva of children with caries, up to 90 days, and to observe the effect on MS serotypes c, d and e.
Materials and method: 51 children ages 4 to 6 years with caries were randomized in experimental n=26 and control group n=25. After signing the informed consent, the parents were instructed to topically apply the respective agent for 5 min daily during 7 days by means fluoride trays. Non-stimulated saliva samples were collected at 0, 1, 7, 14, 28 and 90 days for microbiological test.
Results: the reduction of MS was statistically significant in the experimental group (p = 0.001) at day one. When the reduction of MS in both groups was compared, the difference was not statistically significant (p›0.005). The serotype found more frequently at the beginning of the study was the serotype c in both groups and at the end of the study the serotype e was the most prevalent. The high prevalence of caries was related to the association of serotypes c, d and e in the same subject.
